  1. AllTrails, the hiking and biking companion that was named 2023’s iPhone App of the Year, is launching a new premium membership called “Peak” that includes an upgraded feature set. This $80-per-year subscription will introduce AI tools to build custom routes, real-time trail condition forecasts, trail traffic heatmaps, and a feature that lets you identify trees and plants using your phone’s camera. The new option will initially roll out in the next few weeks to select members and will be available globally to all users by June. AllTrails users can sign up for early access on its website. A longtime popular app for outdoor enthusiasts, AllTrails raised a growth round of $150 million in 2021 when the COVID pandemic saw people rekindling their relationship with nature amid lockdowns and social distancing measures. Unfortunately for the company, Apple entered AllTrails’ market just ahead of naming it App of the Year by adding support for topographic maps with trailheads, contour lines, hill shading, elevation gains, and more in Apple Maps in the U.S. The following year, Apple encroached even further, with features like offline maps, custom routes, and tools to explore national parks and other trails outside the U.S. AllTrails’ latest update, then, can be seen as the company fighting back with a selection of features targeted at its most engaged and most active members. Image Credits:AllTrails The new AI-powered feature in the Peak membership, for instance, lets users build their ideal trail either by starting from scratch or customizing existing trails. Smart-routing functionality uses AI to change a trail by making it shorter, less steep, or even “more scenic,” among other things. The new trail conditions forecast will provide information about the temperature, precipitation, snow depth, and more, essentially putting a weather app inside AllTrails. There are also alerts for things like air quality and mosquito activity. A later update will add terrain and ground conditions, like pavement, gravel, or mud. Berkeley, CA | June 5 BOOK NOW Image Credits:AllTrails The added heatmap option can help hikers and bikers who hate getting stuck on crowded trails, as well as those who prefer a crowd for safety purposes, like when hiking alone. To work, the app’s access to millions of users’ activity provides it with traffic data to make estimates, similar to how Google Maps uses data to predict when a store, restaurant, bar, or other venue is the most “busy.” Image Credits:AllTrails This summer, Peak members will also gain access to an Outdoor Lens feature, which lets them instantly identify a tree, plant, or flower and log it in the app. Over time, more identification features will be added to the Lens, the company notes. Image Credits:AllTrails In addition to Peak’s launch, AllTrails is rolling out updates to its Base and Plus memberships. Base is the company’s free offering with trail maps, community reviews, and navigation, while Plus adds offline access, wrong-turn alerts, 3D trail previews, and live trail activity sharing Both will receive a feature called Points of Interest, which adds more than 500,000 mapped viewpoints, landmarks, and trail amenities to the app. Plus subscribers, meanwhile, will also gain a feature called Offline Area, which lets them download a customized area for offline exploration that includes high-resolution maps and other details.
  2. Microsoft is hosting its annual Build developer conference next week from May 19 to 22. The event is guaranteed to include announcements regarding new AI integrations, services, and apps, including for Windows. At last year’s Build, Microsoft announced an integration of Copilot into Microsoft Teams, Copilot+ AI-powered PCs, Windows Volumetric Apps for Meta Quest headsets, and more. The keynotes will be streamed online for free. As for what to expect, there is good reason to believe Microsoft will announce deeper integrations for its Copilot generative AI with many of its software offerings, both on the consumer and enterprise sides. The company last November raised prices for many of its software products, including Windows 365, Office 365, and Microsoft 365, among many others, by 5%. To justify these increases, the company could introduce new AI-powered features and capabilities. Copilot is likely to be a headliner at Build, and big changes to it could be on the way. Microsoft is reportedly testing alternative AI models from xAI, Meta, Anthropic, and DeepSeek as possible replacements for OpenAI technology in Copilot as the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI becomes strained. On Windows, Copilot could gain “agentic” functionality that allows the tech to perform basic PC tasks autonomously. Well-known leaker TestingCatalog found references to an Action button in the Copilot client for Windows that, when selected, can kick off certain “everyday tasks.” Microsoft is also said to have developed a family of models called MAI that are competitive with OpenAI’s own, which the tech giant is considering offering through an API. Build may well end up being the venue where Microsoft decides to unveil these. Rumors of a “Maia 2” bubbled up on social media last week; chipmaker Marvell is contracted to manufacture it, according to semiconductor analyst Ray Wang.
  3. Buzzy new EV startup Slate Auto has racked up more than 100,000 reservations for its customizable low-cost electric pickup truck, the company has confirmed to TechCrunch. Slate crossed the milestone over the weekend, just a little more than two weeks after coming out of stealth mode and unveiling the truck at an event in Los Angeles, California. The company has said the truck will start below $20,000 after applying the $7,500 federal EV tax credit and plans to build the vehicles at a former printing plant in Warsaw, Indiana, as TechCrunch first reported. “We are truly humbled by America’s response to Slate’s brand launch and the launch of our truck,” Slate’s chief commercial officer Jeremy Snyder said in a statement to TechCrunch. “We are excited for what the future holds.” Collecting 100,000 reservations so quickly is one sign of how much interest there has been in Slate since it revealed the truck, but it’s no guarantee those reservations will translate to sales. The company is only asking prospective buyers to plop down $50 to reserve their place in line to eventually order the truck; the fee is refundable. Many other EV startups have touted reservations in the past only to fail to live up to the expectations of such big, round numbers. Fisker filed for bankruptcy having sold just a few thousand Ocean SUVs despite once claiming more than 60,000 reservations. Lordstown Motors, meanwhile, was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for misleading investors about the number of “preorders” for its own electric pickup truck. (Lordstown Motors similarly filed for bankruptcy and ultimately settled with the SEC.) Slate has big goals for its truck, which — for a currently undisclosed price — can also be transformed into an SUV. The company says it will have capacity to make as many as 150,000 vehicles by the end of 2027 at the Indiana factory. And it has big backers helping Slate try to reach that goal, including Jeff Bezos (through his family office, Bezos Expeditions), Guggenheim Partners CEO Mark Walter, and VC firm General Catalyst.
  4. Federal safety investigators have sent Tesla a detailed list of questions on its upcoming robotaxi service as part of an investigation into how the company’s “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” software operates in low-visibility conditions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation wants the additional information about Full Self-Driving (Supervised) — or “FSD” — in order to “understand how Tesla plans to evaluate its vehicles and driving automation technologies for use on public roads,” according to the letter published Monday and first reported by Reuters. Tesla hasn’t been quiet about plans to launch a paid ride-hailing robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, using its own fleet vehicles this coming June. But it appears that Tesla’s April 23 post on X captured the attention of federal regulators. That post, which is cited in the letter, read: “FSD Supervised ride-hailing service is live for an early set of employees in Austin & San Francisco Bay Area. We’ve completed over 1.5k trips & 15k miles of driving. This service helps us develop & validate FSD networks, the mobile app, vehicle allocation, mission control & remote assistance operations.” NHTSA opened its investigation into Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” software in October after four reported crashes in low-visibility situations. Tesla’s FSD software is an advanced driver-assistance system that requires the driver to keep their hands on the wheel even as it handles some of the driving operations like braking and steering in certain environments and conditions. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the robotaxis will use the yet-to-be-released “unsupervised” version of its Full Self-Driving software. In its May letter, the agency sent Tesla a series of questions squarely aimed at determining whether the automated driving system in its planned robotaxis is the same — or similar — to FSD Supervised. The agency asked for specifics on the fleet size and which vehicle models will be used in the robotaxi service, how Tesla plans to determine whether its robotaxi system is safe and if the automated driving system has any relationship to its FSD Supervised product. 5. Google is gearing up to hold its largest developer conference of the year, Google I/O 2025, on May 20 and May 21. CEO Sundar Pichai, DeepMind CEO and Cco-founder Demis Hassabis, and executives in charge of Search, Cloud, and Android will announce major updates to Google’s product offerings. We’re expecting Google I/O 2025 to focus on AI a lot (seriously, a lot). Google’s family of AI models, Gemini, will likely take center stage during Google I/O 2025 as Pichai and Hassabis continue their push for dominance over OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic, and other well-funded competitors. We’re also expecting updates around DeepMind’s projects, such as its multimodal AI system Project Astra. At last year’s Google I/O, the company teased a pair of smart glasses powered by Project Astra. A key theme at Google I/O 2025 will be how AI is infiltrating all of Google’s products. For example, Google’s head of Search, Elizabeth Reid, is giving a talk on the AI stage about how generative AI is “revolutionizing search.” Other Google executives are scheduled to speak at the event about how scientists are using AI, how AI agents will use apps for users, and how Waymo’s autonomous vehicles use AI to navigate the physical world. The Google I/O 2025 keynote kicks off at 10 a.m. PT on May 20 from the company’s Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View. You can watch a livestream of Google’s keynote here, or watch via the embed below. At 1:30 p.m. PT, the developer keynote begins. As the name suggests, the developer keynote will focus less on the consumer side of things. Later in the day, at 3:30 p.m. PT, Hassabis will speak with Alex Kantrowitz, host of the Big Technology Podcast, about the future of DeepMind’s AI and its impact on the world. At the same time, there will be livestreamed talks about the latest updates to Android, Chrome, and Google Cloud. Some of the talks at Google I/O won’t be livestreamed, but lucky for you, TechCrunch will be on the ground covering the biggest announcements from the event. 6. Apple on Monday released iOS 18.5, which expands emergency satellite capabilities to iPhone 13 owners for the first time. Previously, the satellite features were available to those running an iPhone 14 or later. The emergency satellite system for iPhone is designed to be used at critical times when a cellular signal or Wi-Fi is not available, as it lets people contact emergency services, send a text by satellite, share information with their emergency contacts, or call for roadside assistance. The iOS 18.5 update is focused on providing access to carriers’ satellite services, like those from T-Mobile (with Starlink) or Verizon (with AST SpaceMobile). You can check to see if you have access to this feature from the Cellular menu under the iPhone’s Settings. To date, the feature has been credited with saving lives, rescuers say, including helping lost and injured hikers, saving people from wildfires, and more. While the expansion of satellite emergency services to iPhone 13 owners is the most notable addition with iOS 18.5, iPhone users are also receiving a good handful of smaller updates. This includes the addition of a new feature for Screen Time, Apple’s parental control software, which alerts parents if their child correctly enters the parent’s passcode to access Screen Time permissions. Among the other improvements is an updated Mail app, which makes it easier to access the “All Mail” category as its own tab; a new Pride wallpaper; and an easier way to subscribe to content from the Apple TV app on a smart TV or connected device. Plus, Apple has fixed a bug where the Apple Vision Pro app would launch with a black screen if downloaded from the App Store, as well as other bugs with Siri, enterprise apps not launching, and more. Berkeley, CA | June 5 BOOK NOW iOS 18.5 was released alongside iPadOS 18.5, which largely addresses bug fixes; visionOS 2.5; watchOS 11.5; and security-focused updates for macOS Ventura 13.7.6 (22H625) and macOS Sonoma 14.7.6.
  7. Whoop has backed down, somewhat, from the controversial upgrade plans around its Whoop 5.0 fitness tracker. When the company first announced Whoop 5.0 this week, it said members who wanted the new device could either extend their subscriptions by 12 months or pay a one-time upgrade fee of $49 ($79 for the model with EKG sensors). This seemed inconsistent with Whoop’s overall value proposition, where it charges higher subscription prices (ranging $199 to $359 a year) while allowing customers to upgrade their hardware for free. More specifically, it seemed to contradict a statement on the company’s website promising users free hardware upgrades if they’ve been members for at least six months. After customers began complaining, the company responded with a Reddit post both announcing a more expansive upgrade policy and claiming to clarify its overall approach. Now, anyone with more than 12 months remaining on their subscriptions is eligible for a free upgrade to Whoop 5.0 (or a refund if they’ve already paid the fee). And customers with less than 12 months can extend their subscriptions to get the upgrade at no additional cost. While the company said it’s making these changes because it “heard your feedback,” it also suggested that its apparent stinginess was tied to its transition from a model focused on monthly or six-month subscription plans to one where it only offers 12- and 24-month subscriptions. “We also want to acknowledge that a previous blog article incorrectly stated that anyone who had been a member for just 6 months would receive a free upgrade,” the company said. “This was never our policy and should never have been posted.” Techcrunch event Exhibit at TechCrunch Sessions: AI Secure your spot at TC Sessions: AI and show 1,200+ decision-makers what you’ve built — without the big spend. Berkeley, CA | June 5 BOOK NOW There’s been a mixed response to these changes on the Whoop subreddit, with one moderator describing it as a “win for the community.” Other posters were more skeptical, with one writing, “You don’t publish a policy by accident and keep it up for years. Removing it after backlash doesn’t erase the fact [that] it is real.” There were also a number of complaints from users who said they had 11 months left on their subscriptions — so they just missed the free upgrade cutoff.
  8. The mobile controller company Backbone unveiled its Backbone Pro controller this week, which brings iOS and Android gaming experiences to the next level. A successor to the Backbone One controller, the Pro features full-size joysticks, re-mappable buttons, and Bluetooth compatibility, making for a more premium gaming setup. Unlike its predecessor, the Backbone Pro doesn’t need to be attached to a phone to work, meaning that you could use it as a wireless controller. That functionality gets extra useful when using cloud gaming services like Xbox Game Pass. You can play a game with the Backbone Pro controller on your TV, then plug your phone into the controller and instantly pick up where you left off on mobile. “Our thought is, gaming should be a lot more straightforward,” founder Maneet Khaira told TechCrunch. ”It needs to be really simple and work more like AirPods when you connect to screens.” Backbone is betting big on the growth of mobile gaming, which has only been accelerated by expanding cloud gaming options, but so far, Backbone seems to be cementing itself as the top hardware maker for mobile gamers. It also helps that Backbone is teeming with celebrity investors like Ashton Kutcher, The Weeknd, MrBeast, Post Malone, and Amy Schumer, as well as gaming insiders like Discord founder Jason Citron. But as someone who doesn’t use Xbox Game Pass or similar cloud subscriptions, I never quite understood the hype around using a smartphone as a gaming device. I already have a Nintendo Switch, a device specifically made for gaming, as opposed to my iPhone, which is designed for a bazillion other things. So to test the Backbone Pro, I downloaded some games on my phone that I already play on the Switch, solely for the purpose of comparing the gameplay experience. The verdict? I have logged about 13 hours of gameplay on the iOS version of Stardew Valley over the last three days. I’m not fully sold on mobile gaming — answering texts while playing a game is kind of annoying — but I have to say, I’d much rather sit on the couch with the Backbone Pro than the Nintendo Switch, which prioritizes screen size over comfort. Image Credits:TechCrunchThe Backbone Pro shines in its ergonomics. Sometimes, when you pick up a new iPhone, it feels familiar, yet slightly off, and it takes some time to get used to the feel of the new device before the differences stop being noticeable. This was the experience I had playing the Nintendo Switch 2, as opposed to the original console. Available through May 9 or while tables last. Berkeley, CA | June 5 BOOK NOW But the Backbone Pro’s design feels so naturally intuitive that I didn’t even experience those few minutes of discomfort. Seconds after plugging my phone into the controller’s USB-C port for the first time, I could play Hades — a game rife with chaotic button mashing — just as easily as I do on the Switch. I find the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller uncomfortable for games like Hades, so that’s saying something. “Meta, when they were designing the Quest, they would do multiple iterations of a headset [prototype] in a week, because they could print them and then rapidly test them, get feedback, and iterate,” Khaira said. He took inspiration from that technique when developing the Backbone Pro, investing heavily in the same kind of technology. Backbone 3D-printed over 9,000 different parts before landing on the model that ultimately shipped, making microscopic tweaks to every facet of the controller before arriving at something that makes Joy-Cons feel like Fisher-Price toys. This level of precision and versatility comes at a cost. The Backbone Pro retails for $169.99, which is a bit steep considering that you could buy a refurbished Nintendo Switch Lite for the same price. But for serious players who need that cross-device functionality, the Backbone Pro could be worth it. If you’re not moving back and forth between Xbox Game Pass on your TV and your phone, you could probably be fine with the original Backbone One, which is $99.99.
  9. OpenAI is currently in “a tough negotiation” with its biggest investor and partner, Microsoft, according to the Financial Times. The AI startup recently announced a major change to its corporate restructuring plans — while it still aims to convert its business arm into a for-profit public benefit corporation, its nonprofit board will still be in control. The FT says it spoke to multiple sources who describe Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion in OpenAI to date, as a key holdout needed to approve the restructuring. While the crux of the negotiation is how much equity Microsoft will receive in the new for-profit entity, the companies are also reportedly renegotiating their broader contract, with Microsoft offering to give up some of its equity in exchange for access to OpenAI technology developed after the current 2030 cutoff. Sources also told the FT that the relationship between the two companies has become more competitive as OpenAI’s enterprise business has grown and as it pursues its wildly ambitious Stargate infrastructure project.
  10. The tech industry seems to have two thoughts when it comes to where human workers fit into the AI-powered world they are creating: Either they think that all the jobs, except perhaps their own, will be done by bots. (VC Marc Andreessen seems to think that his work as an investor could never be automated). Or they think that bots will do the icky, boring work, acting as human companions in jobs while humans do brand-new jobs that the bot revolution creates. The latter is the one most supported by historical evidence. The World Economic Forum predicts that 92 million roles will be displaced by current technological trends, but that 170 million new jobs will be created. For those who don’t have the economic power, or the intellectual interest, to get a master’s degree in AI and machine learning — especially the people who now occupy unskilled labor roles like warehouse workers — what does the bot-filled future look like for them? Amazon offered a hint of one sort of path on Wednesday when it announced major progress toward replacing warehouse workers with robots with its new Vulcan robot that can “feel.” “Vulcan is helping make work safer by handling ergonomically challenging tasks, while creating opportunities for our teammates to grow their skills in robotics maintenance,” CEO Andy Jassy posted on X. In one breath, Amazon’s blog post about Vulcan described how the robot will work alongside humans, gathering items from the warehouse’s highest and lowest shelves, so humans won’t have to climb ladders or bend down all day long. Humans will then gather items stored only in the middle and/or items that the new “feeling” robot still somehow can’t manage to pick up. In the next breath, Amazon talks about how it is training a small number of warehouse workers to become robot technicians, as it uses the bot for more of the warehouse picking role. Techcrunch event Exhibit at TechCrunch Sessions: AI Secure your spot at TC Sessions: AI and show 1,200+ decision-makers what you’ve built — without the big spend. Available through May 9 or while tables last. Berkeley, CA | June 5 BOOK NOW “These robots — which play a role in completing 75% of customer orders — have created hundreds of new categories of jobs at Amazon, from robotic floor monitors to onsite reliability maintenance engineers,” the blog post said, adding that it offers a job retraining program for some workers to gain these robotic maintenance skills. Although Amazon didn’t say so, this would obviously not be a 1:1 conversion. It wouldn’t require an army of humans to oversee the robots in the same way it needs them to fulfill warehouse orders directly. Nor would everyone have the aptitude or desire to become robot mechanics. But the fact that Amazon included info on its retraining program alongside its Vulcan announcement is meaningful. That’s because there’s been very little evidence so far of what the post robots-doing-all-the-jobs looks like for working-class humans. (One AI startup founder even suggested to TechCrunch that in an AI-does-all-jobs world, the humans would somehow just live on government-issued welfare.) But perhaps, instead of grocery clerks, there would be “automation monitors,” much like we have one clerk overseeing every row of self-check today. Instead of fast-food cooks, workers would oversee the cook bots, and so on. Running robots becomes like operating a PC: Pretty much everyone needs to know how to do it to be employable. Then again, this fully bot future may never really materialize. Bots could remain the purview of only the biggest and most deep-pocketed companies — like with Amazon or how they’re used in things like automotive manufacturing — while the vast majority of retail, restaurants, and driving jobs continue to be done by humans. At least for decades more. Remember, Amazon is a company that was trying to sell its just-walk-out automation Amazon Go technology to a wider retail/grocery industry. The retail industry is none too fond of its biggest competitor, Amazon, and wasn’t terribly interested. The tech was later found to be using humans in India to watch and label videos, and even Amazon later scaled back on its use. Such tech (by Amazon or others) is hardly visible in the wild today.
  11. Much of the world isn’t paying close attention to Greece right now. That may be a mistake. Best known for its stunning islands, sun-soaked cities, and deep historical roots, Greece has been quietly laying the foundation for something far less expected: a modern, resilient tech economy. While the international spotlight often misses it, something real is happening on the ground, as this editor discovered this week across dozens of conversations in Athens. The country that once stood at the precipice of economic collapse hasn’t merely rebranded itself as an “Innovation Nation.” It’s turning clever marketing into reality, with policy shifts, investor interest, and a renewed sense of purpose around technology and entrepreneurship. Indeed, in a sit-down Thursday night with Greece Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, he made the case that Greece is not just catching up, but poised to leap ahead. “There is significant room to grow,” he said, but he believes something very real is happening in his country. “The stars are aligned.” Greece, Mitsotakis explained, made a “conscious decision” several years ago to expand beyond its traditional economic pillars like tourism and hospitality. “Tech could be 10% of our economy. This is perfectly doable,” he said, citing rising startup formation, increased capital flows, and an intangible but unmistakable “buzz” in the ecosystem. Drawing from his own background in venture capital—he founded Greece’s first incubator in 2001—he spoke with a fluency not often heard from heads of state. While Greece may be arriving late to Europe’s tech party, that timing could actually prove to be an advantage. Because it didn’t have the capital to make bad bets, Greece has sidestepped some of the inflated valuations and failed ventures that have weighed down more mature ecosystems. With a relatively clean slate, the country is moving quickly to position itself at the forefront of emerging technologies – particularly artificial intelligence. In AI, the Prime Minister sees a chance not just to catch up, but to skip ahead. “We want to use technology to leapfrog,” he said. “Not just to catch up, but to actually do better than many European countries.” He pointed to Greece’s success in digitizing public services – saying it had far exceeded even Germany in some respects – and to pilot programs like a Microsoft-backed AI system that slashed government contract review times from hours to minutes. That dual strategy of nurturing startups while modernizing government forms the backbone of Greece’s AI ambitions. Mitsotakis envisions Greece as a laboratory for responsible innovation, particularly in areas like health, civil protection, and defense. “We’re not just talking about what the startup community is doing. We are the clients of the technologies. And we want to have more of a startup mentality as a government.” Techcrunch event Exhibit at TechCrunch Sessions: AI Secure your spot at TC Sessions: AI and show 1,200+ decision-makers what you’ve built — without the big spend. Available through May 9 or while tables last. Berkeley, CA | June 5 BOOK NOW A major pillar of this transformation is talent. Greece is working to reverse the brain drain that saw thousands of skilled workers leave during the financial crisis. “The tax breaks are there – a 50% discount on income tax for seven years,” he said, but also acknowledged that “people are not going to come back just for a tax break. They will come back if they have a good job opportunity, if they feel they can do something rewarding, and that they can actually grow their business in Greece.” To that end, we touched on two new programs introduced last year designed to bring skilled foreign workers and entrepreneurs into the country. While the initiatives are still in the pipeline, they reflect a broader commitment to openness. “This is a global war for talent,” Mitsotakis said. “We need to make it easy for either Greek talent to return or for people who can live anywhere to choose to work here.” Mitsotakis also emphasized the importance of expanding tech beyond Athens, with hubs emerging in Thessaloniki, Heraklion, and other university cities. “This should also be a story about regional development.” Still, the Prime Minister acknowledged ongoing challenges, including the pace of legal reform, the need for more late-stage capital, and the complexities of doing business across the European market. But what he believes Greece now offers, unlike during the depths of the crisis, is predictability, stability, and momentum. “Is this country moving in the right direction?” he asked rhetorically. “The answer is yes.” For Mitsotakis, the ultimate goal is to make Greece’s progress “irreversible.” While legacy building isn’t his focus, he said, both Mitsotakis and the roughly 300 investors and founders who gathered for our sit-down – some of whom have happily moved back to Greece from the Bay Area, London and elsewhere – clearly want to ensure that the country’s progress continues apace. “We can’t [perform] miracles,” says Mitsotakis. “We can’t make up lost ground in a couple of years. But I think we’ve broken out of the vicious cycle of the past, and I do see technology as a great opportunity, both for the private sector and for the government.” You can catch our full interview with Mitsotakis below.

  13. For decades, buying property in Egypt meant navigating a fragmented real estate market, relying on personal networks, dealing with commission-driven brokers, and facing developers more focused on selling than serving customer needs. In 2019, Mostafa El Beltagy, Abdel-Azim Osman, Ahmed Rafea, Mohamed Abou Ghanima, and Aly Rafea founded Nawy to bring transparency and efficiency to the market. Now positioning itself as Africa’s largest proptech platform, Nawy has raised $52 million in Series A funding, led by Africa-focused VC firm Partech Africa, validating its model of combining property listings with brokerage services. The Series A round, which also includes $23 million in debt financing from Egypt’s top banks, brings the total to $75 million, one of the largest Series A rounds for an African startup. Co-founder and CEO El Beltagy’s journey into proptech started as a personal frustration. After several years working in corporate jobs across multiple countries, he wanted to invest in real estate in Egypt, a market that many people view as a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation. However, as he navigated the process of purchasing property, the lack of transparency and the prevalence of biased advice became glaring problems. “I had no way to look at the market and understand what’s out there, aside from going almost developer by developer, picking up their brochures and asking their salespeople questions, which was highly inefficient,” the CEO recounted. “In this sector, everyone is incentivized to push you one way or another.” These challenges led El Beltagy to build Nawy to help people buy, sell, invest in, finance, and manage property. Its model, combining a property listing platform with brokerage services, has set it apart in an industry still dominated by agents with entrenched, offline relationships. Available through May 9 or while tables last. Berkeley, CA | June 5 BOOK NOW Making real estate accessible At first, Nawy struggled to secure those listings. Developers were skeptical about Nawy’s value because they weren’t big enough to drive traffic to their listings. Brokers, on the other hand, saw Nawy as a competitor. To build trust, Nawy introduced immediate commission payments, funded upfront, to brokers who made their first transaction on the platform. This shifted sentiment, leading to word-of-mouth growth that has seen over 3,000 brokerages actively using Nawy Partners (its product for brokers), accessing live inventory and flexible payouts. Additionally, the Cairo-based proptech attracts over a million monthly visitors, with hundreds of developers competing for visibility. About 150 developers cover most of Egypt’s new build market, which is worth around $30 billion, based on 100,000 transactions annually, according to El Beltagy. Over the last few years, Nawy has expanded beyond listings and brokerage services, evolving into a full-stack real estate ecosystem. This includes Nawy Shares, a fractional ownership product that lets users invest in property with at least $500, making real estate accessible to Egypt’s middle-income population, which has long been priced out. Additionally, Nawy has developed a mortgage product, “Move Now Pay Later,” designed to allow users to buy through installment plans and financing options in a market where banks rarely offer loans for real estate purchases. “The real estate market is very lopsided in the sense that most people are buying new build, not resale. We believe enabling this product will cause a bit of a shift,” El Beltagy said. “It’s mortgage packaged differently because mortgages are almost non-existent here.” He added that Nawy’s $23 million debt facility backs this offering. Immune to economic volatility? These products have diversified Nawy’s revenue streams, which the company claims to have grown more than 50x in dollar terms over the last four years, despite the Egyptian pound losing 69% of its value. El Beltagy attributes much of this growth to the market’s demand for real estate as a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation. While the currency crisis did impact local demand, the influx of expatriate money helped offset the drop. As a result, Nawy closed 2024 with over $1.4 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV), up from $38 million in 2020. With fresh capital, Nawy plans to expand beyond Egypt into North Africa and the Middle East, regions rapidly emerging as some of the world’s most promising real estate markets. Nawy is targeting Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE as its next markets (in the UAE for instance, platforms like Huspy and Property Finder already have strong traction.) El Beltagy mentions that the company will acquire smaller companies along the way. Recently, it acquired the property management startup ROA and rebranded it as “Nawy Unlocked,” expanding its product offerings. The Series A round, raised across two tranches, will fund these plans, including advancing product development and integrating AI across Nawy’s processes, according to El Beltagy. Other notable investors participating in the round include Development Partners International’s Nclude Fund, e& Capital, Endeavor Catalyst, HOF Capital, March Capital Investments, Outliers, Plug and Play, Shorooq Partners, VentureSouq, and Verod-Kepple Africa Ventures. “We’re excited to support Nawy as they build the foundation for a modern, tech-driven real estate experience,” said Tidjane Deme, general partner at Partech. “Their team has deep market insights, coupled with ambitious regional expansion plans and exceptional execution, positioning them as the clear proptech champion in Africa and the Middle East.”
